New Year's Eve (2011)

Title: New Year's Eve
Rating: PG-13
Run Time: 1 hour 58 minutes
Release Date: December 9, 2011
Genre(s): Romance, Drama
Production Co.: New Line Cinema
Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher

Who would I recommend this to?
People who like roooomance.

What is this about?
A bunch of couples with different situations on New Year's Eve.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Around the end of the year.

Where does it take place?
New York City.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Apparently I have seen this before. I didn't know that I did, but then I saw Jon Bon Jovi and it all came back to me. I have no idea when I saw it though.

How did I like this?

Despite it completely slipping my mind, I did enjoy this movie a lot. There's a ton of variety in the story-lines and characters, so even if you don't care about some characters, there's plenty of others to keep you entertained.

My one issue, which is nitpicky, is that Ingrid's "resolutions" are a bucket list. Her scenes are some of my favorites, but those are not New Year Resolutions.

Have you seen New Year's Eve? What did you think?
If not, would you watch it?

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's Christmastime and it's Pooh Bear.

Winnie the Pooh stories are (almost) always cute, and this was no exception. I thought I hadn't seen this before, but I had!

Where does it take place?
The Motherland and Boston.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's a new Disney movie, my mom liked it, and it was set at Christmas.

How did I like this?
I feel like Disney was trying to recapture that Enchanted vibe, which is never going to happen. It was still a really fun story. It also follows Disney's recent trend of switching up the message from the typical "you need a prince to live happily ever after."

Have you seen Godmothered? What did you think?
If not, would you watch it?

More tales of Christmas spirit starring the Sensational Six.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmastime.

Where does it take place?
The Disney universe.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's Christmastime and I watched the first one.

How did I like this?
I sadly didn't enjoy these stories. I found them quite shallow. There was no heart like in the previous collection.

I also hate this animation style. I'm surprised Disney stuck with it for so long, but I guess this new generation likes it.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's Christmastime and I hadn't seen it in a long time.

How did I like this?
I actually never realized this was part of three story movie. I just very clearly remembered the Huey, Dewey, and Louie tale of repeating Christmas until they got things right.

All three stories are cute and sum up Christmas in a classic, family-friendly way.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because this is the best Christmas Carol movie in existence.

How did I like this?
I love this movie. It had fallen off my radar for awhile, but last year I was reminded of my love for it. It's perfectly cast, and the Muppets fit their characters so well. The songs are all delightfully catchy, and Scrooge is perfectly Scroogey.

I'll Be Home For Christmas (1998)

Run Time: 1 hour 26 minutes
Release Date: November 13, 1998
Genre(s): Comedy
Production Co.: Walt Disney Pictures
Director: Arlene Sanford
Starring: Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Jessica Biel, Adam LaVorgna

Who would I recommend this to?
Everyone who grew up in the '90s.

What is this about?
A self-absorbed teen has to make it across the country for Christmas dinner without a car, money, or anything other than a Santa suit and his wits.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmas Eve.

Where does it take place?
Across America from Los Angeles to New York.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Back in 1998 I had a huge crush on JTT, so duh. I've watched it nearly every Christmas since.

How did I like this?
I love this movie, even if my JTT crush has dwindled. I miss the offbeatness of '90s movies. They just don't make family films like this anymore. Especially for this age group. The character are in college, but it's not raunchy, but also not entirely wholesome. It's perfect.

Release Date: November 3, 2006
Genre(s): Fantasy, Comedy
Production Co.: Walt Disney Pictures
Director: Michael Lembeck
Starring: Tim Allen, Martin Short, Elizabeth Mitchell

Who would I recommend this to?
Christmas fanatics.

What is this about?
Jack Frost tries to take over Christmas while Santa is distracted with his in-laws and new baby on the way.

When would be a good time to watch this?
After the second one...

Where does it take place?
The North Pole.

Why did I decide to watch this?
I saw it in theaters because I like the other two movies.

How did I like this?
I didn't like it at all the first time I saw it. I found it annoying. It's still weird but I liked it bit better this time around. Jack Frost had the potential to be a great villain, but the set-up wasn't right.. And there's no reason for Mrs. Claus to be mad about Santa doing his job at Christmastime! YOU MARRIED SANTA!!

The Canada jokes are funny though.

The Santa Clause 2 (2002)

Title: The Santa Clause 2
Rating: G
Run Time: 1 hour 44 minutes
Release Date: November 1, 2002
Genre(s): Fantasy, Comedy
Production Co.: Walt Disney Pictures
Director: Michael Lembeck
Starring: Tim Allen, Spencer Breslin, Elizabeth Mitchell

Who would I recommend this to?
Fans of the first one and Christmas in general.

What is this about?
Scott Calvin is enjoying life as Santa until he finds out that he has to get married soon or else lose his Santa magic.

When would be a good time to watch this?
After the first one.

Where does it take place?
Chicago and the North Pole.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I like the first one and it's Christmastime.

How did I like this?
I know I'd seen this a few times before, but it's the least memorable of the three. Which watching it now, makes perfect sense. It's about middle-aged dating to save Christmas. Kinda weird, but still enjoyable. This is what gives us unrealistic expectations for relationships.

I had totally forgotten about the Santa clone. He is a mess! Imagine if the North Pole was actually run by someone who follows the rules like that? No one would get presents!

The Santa Clause (1994)

Title: The Santa Clause
Rating: PG
Run Time: 1 hour 37 minutes
Release Date: November 11, 1994
Genre(s): Fantasy, Comedy
Production Co.: Walt Disney Pictures
Director: John Pasquin
Starring: Tim Allen, Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson

Who would I recommend this to?
Christmas fans.

What is this about?
Scott Calvin kills Santa, puts on the suit, and becomes the next St. Nick. Even if he doesn't believe.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmastime.

Where does it take place?
Chicago and the North Pole.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's a Christmas classic.

How did I like this?
This movie is great! It's not the standard workaholic neglecting his family at the holidays tale. In fact, Scott is trying hard to make sure his son does have a great Christmas.

It's a lot more interesting as an adult, because ultimately this movie is about a father kidnapping his son and taking him across state lines while his ex-wife works with the cops to bring him home. Yikes.

Anyone who likes slightly off-beat '90s Christmas comedies.

What is this about?
A workaholic father forgot to pick up the hottest new toy for his son, so hijinks ensue!

When would be a good time to watch this?
Every Christmas.

Where does it take place?
Minnesota.

Why did I decide to watch this?
I don't remember the first time, but I do know I watch it almost every single December since then.

How did I like this?
This is a nearly perfect Christmas movie. It's so over-the-top and fun. There's no way in heck it'd ever get made today, but I consider it a classic that everyone needs to see.

It has the typical workaholic neglecting his family during the holidays type plot, but completely flipped around and awesome.

Fans of Beauty and the Beast.

What is this about?
Belle brings Christmas to the castle despite the Beast's hate for the day.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmas.

Where does it take place?
France.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because Beauty and the Beast is my favorite princess movie, duh.

How did I like this?
It's obviously not as good as the original, but it's a very pleasant Christmas special. Forte is an awesome villain, and I'm still creeped out by him visually all of these years later.

This is a typical grump who hates Christmas getting a change of heart.

Fans of predictable Christmas romances.

What is this about?
A cynical photographer inherits a magical advent calendar.

When would be a good time to watch this?
The Christmas season.

Where does it take place?
Somewhere on Earth...

Why did I decide to watch this?
I like Kat Graham and Christmas movies and yay POC!

How did I like this?
I love the premise of this, but it's so stiff. I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but it just felt stiff.

We obviously know how this is going to end, which is fine, but the journey getting there did nothing for me.

Genre(s): Animation, Fantasy, Drama, Short Film
Production Co.: Walt Disney Pictures

Disney fans and whoever likes Scrooge stories. Kids.

What is this about?
Uncle Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas to change his unloving heart.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Whenever you've got half an hour for some Christmas cheer.

Where does it take place?
London?

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because it's Christmastime and I hadn't seen in it...forever.

How did I like this?
Uncle Scrooge is probably the least scary and mean Scrooge ever, perfect for little kids. It's also fun how the Disney characters' personalities are infused into their Dickens counterparts.

This is a delightful retelling of a classic in an easily digestible format.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020)

Title: The Christmas Chronicles 2
Rating: PG
Run Time: 1 hour 55 minutes
Release Date: November 25, 2020
Genre(s): Fantasy
Production Co.: 1492 Pictures
Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Darby Camp

Who would I recommend this to?
Christmas junkies.

What is this about?
Kate runs away right before Christmas and winds up helping Santa save Christmas again.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmastime.

Where does it take place?
The North Pole.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because the first one was super good.

How did I like this?
It started off rough. It was so cliche with the blended family holiday vacation, teenage girl temper tantrum, "evil" character swooping in at just the right time to sweep her away. I missed grumpy, sassy Santa who has a jam sessions with criminals and hookers! This one was much more the typical family friendly holiday adventure movie, rather than the slightly offbeat version of the first movie.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get better. It was lacking the charm and any kind of sense.

The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

Title: The Christmas Chronicles
Rating: PG
Run Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Release Date: November 22, 2018
Genre(s): Fantasy
Production Co.: 1492 Pictures
Director: Clay Kaytis
Starring: Kurt Russell, Darby Camp, Judah Lewis

Who would I recommend this to?
Christmas enthusiasts.

What is this about?
A pair of siblings attempt to catch Santa on film on Christmas Eve and wind up as stowaways on his sleigh.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmastime.

Where does it take place?
Chicago.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's Christmastime and this is a Christmas movie.

How did I like this?

I had so much trouble accepting Kurt Russel as Santa Claus, since I'm so use to him as Stunt Man Mike in Deathproof. Is he going to crash the sleigh and kill the kids?! Aahhh! I mean, obviously he doesn't. Well, he does crash the sleigh, but no one dies, except maybe the world's Christmas spirit. But once I got into it, I loved seeing a grumpy, possibly serial-killer Santa!

This is a pretty typical must help Santa save Christmas movie, but like I said, grumpy Santa was a fun change. And PAIGE MICHALCHUK cameo! It's always a good time when Santa gets arrested.

Grace is a grump, and then her Eve doll comes to life to save Christmas!

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmas time.

Where does it take place?
Some city, somewhere.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I loved the first one and just found out it was a Christmas movie.

How did I like this?
OMG this movie so gay and sexual! I love it! Not only were there actual gay characters, but just a lot of lesbian innuendo. And just generally a lot of not-so-subtle adult content. I have no idea who the intended audience is, but it's me.

It's also the least Christmasy Christmas movie ever.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Of course I watched this every single year as a kid because OMGCHRISTMAS!!!

When would be a good time to watch this?
Christmas season. Perhaps during a date...

Where does it take place?
New York.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It sounded cute.

How did I like this?
And it was cute. I'm glad that the plot moved along quickly, without her spazzing out too much. She got right on making changes during her repeat Christmas Eves.

I wonder what I do would if I knew I had to repeat the day over and over, with no consequences. But then what if you did something crazy like rip up a parking ticket or get a bad tattoo and then the clock moves forward...

When would be a good time to watch this?
Anytime you have an hour for Disney magic and music.

Where does it take place?
Disney World.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because it's Disney at Christmas time...

How did I like this?
The hosts were terrible. I know the hosts are always over-the-top cheerful and cheesy, but those two seemed so forced and like they were hating life. Most of the performances were good. I only remembered a few of them, but I don't always see these because I don't watch TV.

Now I miss Disneyland even more.

Holiday season.

Where does it take place?
Adam Sandler's imagination.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It was part of my holiday movie marathon and I couldn't remember if I liked this movie or not.

How did I like this?
I probably didn't, because this movie is hella annoying. Adam Sandler's movies are very hit or miss. This is one of his misses. There's a great story here, and not many holiday movies focus on Hanukkah, but it's brought down by the over-the-top humor.

Christmas season date night or girls' night.

Where does it take place?
Ohio.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I love time travel romance.

How did I like this?
It's very cliche, very predictable, very cheesy. It's cute, but very standard and formulaic. I definitely would love this as a book. It's still a fun way to spend some time.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It popped up when I searched "Christmas" on Starz.

How did I like this?
I had zero expectations since I hadn't even heard of this movie before. It's definitely a unique and fun twist on the Santa Claus myth. The plot is very much not unique though and I feel like it's been done better.

Why did I decide to watch this?
I saw it when it first came out and could not remember a single thing other than "Santa! I know him!" and "You sit on a throne of lies."

How did I like this?
It's cute! I was nervous that I'd hate it, but I do not! It's awkwardly hilarious and heartwarming.

Whoville.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I love the other two movies. I actually had no idea it existed until I walked past a movie theater in November 2018.

How did I like this?
It's crazy bright and colorful as one would expect. However I was not expecting this focus on Cindy Lou and her overworked mom. It was a sweet twist on the story, but I honestly did not care. I'm here for the Grinch and Max.

Speaking of the Grinch...he's not that grinch-like. Other than stealing all of the Christmas stuff he didn't come across as grouchy or as a Christmas-hater. It was strange. I loved his interactions with Max though.

Director: Nora Ephron
Starring: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Greg Kinnear

Who would I recommend this to?
Anyone who likes Romance. Preferable someone who grew up in the AOL era.

What is this about?
Bookstore rivals unknowingly fall in love through e-mails.

When would be a good time to watch this?

Date night. Christmastime.

Where does it take place?
New York City.

Why did I decide to watch this?
I don't remember the first time but I was obsessed. Now I'm watching it as part of the pre-holiday season.

How did I like this?
This movie is so cute and I have such a new appreciation for it 22 years later! I totally remember the dial-up tone and that slightly robotic yet cheery "you've got mail" greeting. It's so funny how the internet has changed since then, along with people's views on technology.

Also now that I'm a romance novel junkie, I can see how this uses some favorite tropes to get these two together. It's just delightful! Enemies to lovers! Rivals to lovers! Mystery identity!

And it's weird to see people excited about bookstores! Especially the opening of a new one, since these days bookstores are constantly closing thanks to the internet...

Director: Steven Spielberg
Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts

Who would I recommend this to?
Everyone who needs a pinch of fairy dust.

What is this about?
Peter Pan is all grown up and forgotten how to laugh, until his kids are kidnapped by Captain Hook and he returns to Neverland.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Anytime you have 2+ hours for some heartfelt family fun. Or Christmas time, since this is technically a Christmas movie.

Where does it take place?
Neverland!

Why did I decide to watch this?
I don't remember the first time, and I didn't realize this came out when I was two! But this is the only Peter Pan movie that matters.

How did I like this?
I have always loved this movie, and remember having a crush on Captain Hook and Rufio, which should surprise no one. But I have never liked Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, even though I do like her as an actress. She just didn't seem to fit the role.

This is definitely one of those kid movies with major crossover appeal. I think I had loved it the most as a teenager, actually. But why is it so long?! I'm also finding some things quite questionable as an adult, mostly Peter kissing Moira while she's sleeping and Wendy just stands there?!

Have you seen Hook? What did you think?

Witches turn children into mice, until the mice fight back.

When would be a good time to watch this?
If you want to waste two hours...

Where does it take place?
Alabama.

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's witches...

How did I like this?
I did not. I don't remember the original, except that I've seen it a bunch of times as a kid. I'm going to need to rewatch it. But this remake was not good, even on its own.

Anne Hathaway was way overacting and not even in a way that makes sense. I love her, but she was terrible. Everyone else was just boring. The cat looked hella fake. They should have hired Thackary Binks.

The Frozen gang travels to the Northern Nights.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Never.

Where does it take place?
Arendelle.

Why did I decide to watch this?

Because it was on Disney+ and I make bad life decisions.

How did I like this?
I need to speak to a manager. I demand a thirty minute refund. The writers tried way too hard with the jokes and references; they were beyond forced. And Olaf sounded like a serial killer.

An emo young queen unleashes her ice magic on her kingdom, then flees from her responsibilities.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Anytime is a good time to let it go...

Where does it take place?
Arendelle, Norway.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because it's Disney, duh. I was hella late to the party though. Like two or three years...

How did I like this?
I definitely think it's over-hyped, but I adore it. Was this the first Disney movie that had true love NOT be romantic love? I think so. I loved that. But also "Love is an Open Door" is the best song in the movie. *mic drop*

Why trolls?! I have always been very confused by this, and find their scenes distracting.

What is this about?
Olaf.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Never.

Where does it take place?
Arendelle.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Olaf.

How did I like this?
That was incredibly forced. I did enjoy how it connected scenes from Frozen, but it was 100% unnecessary and made no sense. A Kris and Sven short would have been more welcome.

Have you seen Once Upon a Snowman? What did you think?

Imperial Russia.

Why did I decide to watch this?
I don't remember the first time, but I likely thought it was another awesome Disney Princess movie. Now, I just love it.

How did I like this?
I effing love this movie. The soundtrack is epic. Bartok is adorably hilarious. Rasputin is a great villain. Did I mention the soundtrack?

Why did I decide to watch this?
It's against the law to not watch this for Halloween. I don't remember the first time, since I was four, but I've been obsessed for a long time.

How did I like this?
This is my second favorite movie of all time, so that's how I like it. It speaks to my little spooky heart on a spiritual level.

Why did I decide to watch this?
As always, I don't remember the first time because I was three, but I watch it every year because it's Halloween perfection.

How did I like this?

If you don't love this movie, I just can't understand. It's dark and humorous and inappropriate and so much fun. 1993 was a good year for Halloween.

When would be a good time to watch this?
After the other three.

Where does it take place?
Witch U, Halloweentown.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I watched the other three.

How did I like this?
It's not as good as the other three and I absolutely think that has to do with the change of actress. She didn't feel like Marnie at all. It's still a fun movie, but just didn't fit with the others.

Have you seen Return to Halloweentown? What did you think?

I don't remember the first time, but I watch it every Halloween.

How did I like this?
It's so freaking cute and cheesy in the best possible way! You always know something big is up when you're banned from Halloween for no reason! Halloweentown seems like such a fun place to visit (after the evil has been vanquished, of course) and it's such an odd contrast to the Halloweentown in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Genre(s): Comedy
Production Co.: Happy Madison Productions
Director: Steven Brill
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen

Who would I recommend this to?
Adam Sandler fans who love Halloween.

What is this about?
The typical Adam Sandler character with a speech impediment who is mocked by the whole town becomes the hero that they need.

When would be a good time to watch this?
Halloween.

Where does it take place?
Salem, Massachusetts.

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because it's a new Halloween movie that's not scary.

How did I like this?
Is every single actor who has worked with Adam Sandler in this movie?! Geez.

This is oddly boring. I was not expecting that. I thought if I didn't like it it would be because of over-the-top humor that didn't resonate with me. Instead, it's just not funny or interesting until over an hour in. The one funny 'cause it's true thing was every girl and woman dressing as Harley Quinn.

When would be a good time to watch this?
After the second one, and not even during just Halloween. This is a feel-good summer movie!

Where does it take place?
The Bermuda Triangle, of course!

Why did I decide to watch this?
Because I had just watched the other two.

How did I like this?
While the previous movie tried really hard to make kids laugh, this one had plenty of adult jokes! The witches and Vlad! The chupacabra! That said, the plot was really predictable, but it was super fun and cute.
