Degrassi: The Next Generation - Season 9 (2009-2010)

This post is going to contain spoilers for this season, and possibly later seasons if I make references to future events.

Just Can't Get Enough (1)

A-Plot: Peter's new semester is off to a rocky start despite the new friends. He doesn't get into the music class with the rest of The Studz, Mia's moving to Paris (aka The Vampire Diaries), and he's been feeling pretty down after the high of being in a movie. So he finds a new high...crystal meth which he gets from new students', Fiona and Declan, junkie cousin.

I love Declan and Fiona! Declan is such a sneaky jerk to Peter, and Fiona is just his sweet sidekick (for now).

B-Plot: Another new student,  Jenna, latches onto Clare, much to Alli's annoyance. She's convinced that Jenna's bubbly friendliness is covering up some dark secrets. And she's kind of right...Jenna admits to being a boyfriend stealer. Epic foreshadowing.

Just Can't Get Enough (2)

A-Plot: Peter is suppose to be getting ready to move to Paris with Mia, but his confidence in himself and their relationship is waning, so he turns back to meth to cope. Mia doesn't want that following her across the world, so they are over! He also nearly loses his friends and his band when he flips out on them and runs away while high.

B-Plot: Another couple is in trouble when Blue keeps making promises to students on Holly J's behalf. He believes the shooting changed her. It has, but it didn't make her a pushover. Holly J will always be Holly J. This was probably the most amicable and least dramatic breakup ever.

Shoot to Thrill

A-Plot: Alli feels like her relationship with Johnny is stuck and that he hides who he really is from his friends. So she takes some cute pictures of him for photography club, which she promises not to share. But she wants her friends to see him the way that she does. He just wants her to act more mature in public. So she gets him a cellphone, and starts sending sexy pictures, to keep their relationship going and private. Or so she thinks. Degrassi girls don't have the best track records when it comes to photos.

B-Plot: Fiona is repulsed by all of the attention from the boys at school. Until Riley comes along, and she pretends to date him to keep the others away. This plot isn't that interesting on its own, but looking forward it is sooo great. They're each other's beards! Fiona figures Riley out before she figures herself out.

Close to Me

A-Plot: Declan is flirting with Jane during drama class! And Jane flirts back. She's still dating Spinner, and they're about to take their relationship to the next level...Spinner asks Jane to join the band now that Peter is out. And he asks her to move in with him. Much better than a marriage proposal, but still not something Jane would do. Spinner is just so sweet and committed to her, so it makes me sooo bad that she cheats with Declan.

It's always nice to see Manny and Jay. Especially when they're together. But it's weird to see Manny and Jane as friends.

B-Plot: KC finally gets to play some basketball on the Degrassi team and all I can think about is next season when he yells "You told me to play basketball!" I just can't.

You Be Illin'

A-Plot: Alli claims to be over Johnny, but she does need to get the cellphone back. She checks his locker, but finds pictures of them instead and remembers how happy they were. Until they start talking and tells her that she needs to get checked for STDs, because he found something on himself. He also admitted that he slept with a few girls before her.

B-Plot: Peter tries to get back into the band now that he's clean. But they're not The Studz anymore. They're Janie and the Studs. Luckily, he gets to keep his friends. This boy needs friends.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

A-Plot: Holly J and Jane team up on a project. We all know this is going to be a mess, since Holly J likes Spinner who is dating Jane. And she admits to having a crush on Declan, who Jane is hooking up with. Those girls have more in common than they'd think. Holly J is Jane's new Darcy, because that girl needs friends.

But a moment of confusion...a woman says she needs a babysitter for New Year's Eve. Hasn't that already passed? Season 8 ended during winter break, so shouldn't this be the new semester already?

B-Plot: Dave is new and wants to fit in. He wants his cousin, Shantay, to post about him on the Degrassi blog, so he starts pulling all kinds of hijinks for attention. The wrong type of attention. This is the start of my dislike for Dave.

Beat It (1)

A-Plot: Riley has a crush on their lifeguard teacher, who is gay. But Riley is convinced that he can "fix" himself with the right girl, so he tries to get Fiona to sleep with him. She offers to still be his girlfriend while he figures it out, but he angrily sends her away. I love Fiona. Riley does not deserve her, but she is exactly what he needs. Not that he needs a fake girlfriend to flaunt around, but he needs someone that he can be himself with and support him.

I hate how they use Shantay in this plot though. Riley uses her as a "rebound." After winning her a bear, she says they should go to an amusement park together sometime. Riley forcefully kiss her, and she snaps at him because she thinks he's still with Fiona? But she asked him out? She could have just been mad at the way he forced himself on her, regardless of any prior attachments. She just blows up.

B-Plot: Anya's been lying to Sav (and everyone) about taking a self-defense class, when in reality she's afraid of being made fun of for LARPing. This is one of my all-time favorite plots. It's so cute and unique. We already knew that Anya wasn't like Holly J at all, despite being best friends with her for a time. Anya is her own person and I just adore her and this whole plot.

C-Plot: Dave is getting some good attention now that he scored the winning shot at the basketball game. He asks Jenna out, and automatically assumes that she's not his girlfriend. That's not how it works, Dave.

Beat It (2)

A-Plot: Riley continues to struggle with his sexuality and his anger. He's kicked out of the lifeguard training due to his violent outbursts. He gets desperate so he signs up for therapy to be "cured." He admits as much to Peter and Fiona, who both basically have the same response. At least he has enough sense to realize that $2,000 to "degay" himself is a scam. Instead he enrolls in anger management. That's an amazing first step.

B-Plot: Anya continues to love LARPing and even got Leia involved, who blabs to Sav. Who is shocked and thinks it's only for dorks. Anya says she loves to do it while he does "stupid band stuff." Of course, Sav focuses on the stupid comment even though he put down Anya's hobby. But Anya does not back down and makes sure that Sav understands what this means to her, and he adorably finds a way to bring his music into her world.

C-Plot: Jenna does not want to be Dave's girlfriend! She does want to be a cheerleader though. Jenna is nice enough to be honest with Dave and help him out by pretending that he dumped her. But Alli was right, and Clare needs to keep an eye on her and KC.

Waiting for a Girl Like You

A-Plot: Declan wants Holly J, but she keeps turning down all of his grand gestures. Then he shows up during her babysitting job and really gets to know her. The start of one of my favorite couples. Not that they won't have their issues, but they do make sense together.

B-Plot: Leia is worrying about her relationship with Danny, so she takes teen magazine advice from Shantay. Who has a crush on Danny. She tries to fix it, but Danny admits that he and Leia weren't working out and that he likes her. The two decide to wait a month before dating.

Somebody

A-Plot: Holly J is adding even more activities to her schedule, including a new relationship with Declan. And a mentorship with Declan's mom's foundation, or so she thought. The two are caught in a compromising position during the awards ceremony. Holly J assumes she'll lose her position. Instead she loses Declan who refuses to speak up to his mother. Not an uncommon occurrence. It all works out in the end.

B-Plot: Dave tries to help Connor make friends on the basketball team, but it doesn't go so well. Connor doesn't even care about popularity. Now, Dave pushes Connor aside to up his own status with the guys. Lame, Dave. He does make up for it though as he encourages Connor to share the stats he's collected with the coach to help improve the team.

Heart Like Mine (1)

A-Plot: Jenna is going hard for KC and he falls for it. Poor Clare. But KC has bigger problems when the basketball coach steps over the line with him. This is a new twist for Degrassi on student-teacher relationships and child abuse. Coach Carson might not have touched KC, but giving him alcohol and watching porn together is not okay.

B-Plot: Marco is back! He's now a student teacher and Holly J totally takes advantage of him, putting his evaluation at risk.

Heart Like Mine (2)

A-Plot: Jenna tells KC that she thinks Coach Carson is creepy, but KC feels like he gets him so he keeps hanging out. But when Coach hires a prostitute to help KC out, he realizes that this is very inappropriate. He does the right thing by telling Ms. H.

B-Plot: Fiona is getting pushed aside for Holly J. Her and Declan are super close, but not lately. So she auditions for the musical even though she can't sing. Being the producer, Declan gives her the lead to make her happy. But he backs out of his decision and puts her on costume design.

Holiday Road

A-Plot: Emma and Kelly are doing a cross-country bike ride for charity. Emma is also hiding the fact that she dropped out of school. Kelly also can't keep up with Emma's activism. He wants meat, money, and fun! After he leaves, she admits to Snake how she's failing out of college, then stops at The Dot for a burger. She gets more than meat, when Spinner tells her about how life has been not going to college.

B-Plot: Danny gets upset when he's referred to as simply "another student" on Shantay's blog. Then he's upset when she does mention him and how he calculated how much each of them should pay on their date. Her intention wasn't to call him out as cheap, but to get people commenting on them.

Start Me Up

A-Plot: I totally forgot that Above the Dot was Peter's idea. He's looking for something to do before college, so he cleans up the storage area over the Dot and opens a club. It's a no drugs space, but Peter lets some druggies stay instead of risking them spreading bad word about the place. Too bad he's risking the whole operation, as well as Spinner's job. Thankfully, Peter doesn't fall into Victoria's trap after the two meet up again.

B-Plot: Clare is very sheltered and her writing is suffering for it. To spice up her assignments, she starts "borrowing" experiences from the more worldly Declan.

Broken PROMises (1)

A-Plot: Anya and Sav are going to the formal together, and Anya wants the pictures to be in Sav's mom's garden. But...Sav told his parents that they had broken up, and they're setting him up with the very lovely Farrah. Sav's plan is to have Peter be Farrah's date so he can still be with Anya and make his mother happy.

B-Plot: Johnny asks Alli to the formal, but she turns him down. Alli is staying strong after this boy wronged her one too many times. Bruce tries to help his buddy out, but poor Johnny really only has eyes for Alli. He does try with Lindsey, but then Bruce lashes out at him for thinking he's better than him. It's hard to feel bad for Bruce, because he's been nothing but a jerk for the entire series, while Johnny has grown and changed.

Broken PROMises (2)

A-Plot: Sav's plan is going well. He's at the dance with Anya, and Farrah is with Peter. But Farrah is just playing nice, because she does want Sav for herself. Anya isn't giving him up, but she does give up the V-Card. And lies about being on the pill. Dammit, Anya! Unprotected sex is not the way to keep a man! But it is a way for Degrassi to cover the morning after pill.

B-Plot: Alli and Dave are on drink duty at the dance, and Alli is annoyed with Dave for being immature. But then she realizes that being with Johnny had made her grow up too fast to keep him around. But no more!

Innocent When You Dream

A-Plot: After having a sexy vampire dream about Declan, Clare starts writing Fortnight fanfiction....using Declan's name. She also steals his sweater. Clare is clearly obsessed. These vampire novels are going straight to her head...and other parts.

We meet Wesley! I love him! He's freaking adorable!

B-Plot: Sav is confused as to why Anya is so happy after he dumped her, but he's not. She has the musical, driving classes, and LARPing. He has...the band. Kind of. Everyone is busy studying or with the musical, but Sav wants them to film a music video! Well, that fails, so he goes to talk to Anya, who admits she's been faking her happiness to make him want her back. He was right to say that he can't trust her. I love Anya, but she's lowkey sneaky.

"If writing fan fic keeps you from sucking my boyfriends neck, please continue!" --Holly J Sinclair

In Your Eyes

A-Plot: Riley has completed anger management classes, and was ready to admit to Anya that he's gay. She's excited for him, and does some sleuthing, learning that Zane is gay. Zane asks him out. While he was ready to tell his friend, he might not be ready to date. At least, not openly. I am so happy for Riley going after what he really wants.

B-Plot: KC needs help with math, so Clare offers to tutor him. They two quickly become friends again, but KC screws it up by listening to Jenna's advice for him to cheat off Clare during the exam. He further screws things up by blaming all of his problems on Jenna. Take responsibility for your own actions!

Keep On Loving You

A-Plot: Holly J is ready to have sex, and tells Declan that she loves him, but he says nothing back. They just do the sex. Fiona tells Holly J that Declan has issues saying it because of a previous relationship. Holly J accepts this, which is good. Because I hate people expecting everyone to express their feelings on their own timeline. However, the real issue comes when Declan and Fiona have to move back to New York.

I hate to see my faves leave! But I'm glad they're still going to be on the show.

B-Plot: Danny doesn't want Peter kissing Chantay during the musical, so he devises a plan. Danny is coming down with a cold, so he swaps water bottles with Peter. But Chantay grabs is thinking it's Peters and therefore not germ infested. Oops. A pretty silly plot for a finale, but I wish we could have seen the ENTIRE musical! It was fun!

Degrassi Takes Manhattan/The Heat is On (1-4)

A-Plot: Declan, Fiona, and Holly J are getting ready to go to New York. Fiona is happy to be home, and Declan wants to show Holly J a good time. But Fiona is feeling left out, so she does what she does best, she schemes. She shows up to Holly J's internship and tries to push her out, while also messing up dates with her brother. Which only works when Holly J retaliates, and Declan takes his twin's side.

This episode also contains one of my all-time favorite moments: Fiona kissing Declan! This is just soooo wrong! But it shows just how messed up and codependent their relationship is. Thankfully, Declan realizes this and sends Fiona to spend the summer with other family.

B-Plot: Jane got into Stanford and Spinner is not happy, but then Jay (of course!) talks some sense into him. But then...Spinner overheads Jane and Holly J gossiping about Declan. A long distance relationship is the least of their problems. He needed to know, but I feel bad that this is how it came out. Resolution? Jane runs away to New York with Holly J and the Coynes, which turns out to be amazing for her, because she gets into a real band! But all good things must come to an end, because she has college in the Fall.

C-Plot: Meanwhile, Spinner also needs to hire someone at The Dot since Holly J will be gone all summer, and in walks in Emma Nelson! She also burns the place down on her first day because she disobeyed Spin's orders to not use the panini maker. Even though, why would he leave a newb 5 seconds after hiring her?! But that's how they two end up married. Or something like that. I still do not buy this relationship. The getting drunk married? Yes. Staying married? No.

That was wild.
