Degrass: The Next Genersation - Season 3 (2003-2004)

This post is going to contain spoilers for this season, and possibly later seasons if I make references to future events.

Father Figure (1)

Everyone looks so grown up! New student alert: Chris Sharpe!

A-Plot: It's the first day back to school, and Emma is feeling some kinda way about her mom giving birth and what that means for her. It's also got her thinking about her biological father, whom she assumes is a doctor and doesn't want to be in her life. We're both shocked to learn that he's a patient.

B-Plot: Spinner is trying to get Hazel to trade lockers with Paige, since she feels banished on the far side of the school. What ensues is a real life version of Monopoly property swapping.

Another adult drama plot-line. Caitlyn meets Joey's new girlfriend during Spike's baby shower and is clearly feeling some kinda way too. I was always rooting for Caitlyn and Joey, especially after I finally binged Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High.

Father Figure (2)

A-Plot: After Emma assumed her father was staying out of her life, she meets Shane and he thinks that she doesn't want to see him. This episode had be on the edge of my seat the first time, because I had no idea what Shane was going to do when he showed up at Emma's house. This could have gone much worse than it did. It is disappointing that this is Shane's only appearance on the show.

B-Plot: Spinner has one more locker swap to lock in before Paige gets her ultimate locker. Too bad that locker belongs to Jimmy, who wants Spinner to admit to the whole class that he is whipped by Paige. Needless to say, this embarrasses and enrages her. Was the locker worth it?

U Got the Look

The episode I have been waiting for! Why were thongs ever a fashion statement??!?!

A-plot: Manny doesn't want to be cute. She wants to be hot so Sully will want to date her. She drastically changes her look over the course of the episode, showing more and more skin. JT notices and I was totally on his team, not stupid Sully. Emma and Manny also have their first fight, because of Manny basically changing overnight and Emma not supporting her. I am there for all of it! This is one of my all-time favorite episodes even though it's not one of the bigger issue ones.

B-plot: Craig is no longer grounded, so now his band can start practicing. Joey uses this as an opportunity to relive his high school years, much to Craig's embarrassment. I'm sure we've all had adults in our lives who think they're hip with it.

This episode continues to build up the Caitlyn/Joey/Sydney love triangle.

"I don't want to be adorable. Puppies and bunnies are adorable." --Manny Santos

Pride (1)

This season is still going strong as we finally get to Marco's coming out and introduction to Dylan! And Jay makes his first appearance! Good ol' jerkface Jay.

A-plot: Ellie doesn't want to be Marco's pretend girlfriend anymore. He isn't ready to come out, so he agrees that they're just friends now. He also gets a crush on Paige's brother. Marco and Dylan are so cute! Spinner tries to hook him up with Hazel, while actively denying all signs pointing to GAY! Certainly one of the show's most memorable moments.

B-plot: Snake is sick. Really sick. He goes to stay with Joey to make sure the baby doesn't catch it, but little does he know that what he has is not contagious. Another plot that I completely forgot about! The first time Degrassi does cancer.

Pride (2)

A-plot: Spinner is having the hardest time accepting Marco being gay. He tells Jimmy who calls him out on his prejudice. This is when I truly started liking Jimmy; before this he was pretty boring. I find this plot-line interesting in that it makes it all about Marco. It's not about him coming out. It's about how those around him react. Some good, some bad.

This is also when Degrassi covers its second hate crime. The first being someone defacing Fareeza's culture project in 211. This time, it's physical as Marco is jumped in the park. I love how Jimmy is there to comfort him. Always makes me cry.

B-plot: Snake is trying to stay up-beat about his diagnosis. When I first saw this episode, cancer wasn't really a think to me. But 15 years later, after going through chemo with my mom, I really feel for Emma. It's hard.

"I'm just not going to be anything: gay or straight." --Marco del Rossi

Gangsta, Gangsta

Apparently Season 3 is where Degrassi gets all up in my feels and brings in all of my future favorites. Alex makes her first appearance, but doesn't say or do anything.

A-plot: Sean is feeling lonely, since Emma hasn't been available to hang out lately. Then he falls in with Jay and his group, which spells trouble. It also brings about the second fist fight of the show, which also involved Sean.

B-plot: Toby is also feeling left out by JT, who's been hanging out with the popular crowd. This is also when JT has a wet dream about Liberty at Toby's house, which Toby cruelly uses as revenge. These two have had the most up and down friendship of the show. They rival Jimmy/Spinner and Emma/Manny, who have bigger problems but ultimately come back together. JT and Toby are just always at odds over stupid stuff.

Should I Stay, Or Should I Go?

A-plot: Ashley tells Craig that she loves him, but he can't say it back. I know it sucks when you're feelings aren't reciprocated, but it's not fair to expect someone else's feelings to develop at the pace you dictate. I think Ashley and Craig make a great couple, despite their issues.

Meanwhile, Sully is a jerk to Manny. Manny still has a crush on Craig. She's there for him when Ashley rejects him before they're about to have sex for the first time. Instead, Manny and Craig become the first confirmed couple to have sex. Not that they're a couple, but you know what I mean.

B-plot: Snake is really struggling through chemo, and everyone is trying to cheer him up.

"You conned me into thinking I wanted to have sex with you." --Ashley Kerwin

Whisper to a Scream

A-plot: Elli's first solo plot, where we see that her home life is less than ideal. Her father is stationed overseas, her mother is an alcoholic, and Ellie can't handle all of the stress of home, school, and her co-op. She cuts herself. And it seems like whenever there's a crisis in the lady's room, Paige is the one to offer help.

B-plot: Terri has a secret admirer! This episode is forever tainted by future episodes. Not that I don't like it, because I do. But it's no longer sweet. It's creepy.

Against All Odds

A-plot: Emma has a crush on Chris! Manny convinced her to go to a rave where Chris' cousin lets him DJ, after giving her a makeover. Chris is not like Sean at all, which might be exactly what Emma needs. Both guys are cute, but Chris as a better attitude ever since Sean went to the dark side. He's also more academic, which draws Emma to him.

Meanwhile, Manny is out to get her man as well. I guess Craig doesn't think she's too young now. I have to say that it was super crappy of Manny to leave Emma there alone. That's unsafe.

B-plot: Spinner is still uncomfortable around Marco, which comes out when Jimmy invites them both to come over to study and sleep over. Jimmy continues to be super cool about Marco, and I looove it!

"The environment is not sexy. Do not talk about it." --Manny Santos

Never Gonna Give You Up

A-plot: Here's where it all goes downhill. In a good way? This is when Rick starts to show who he really is. Controlling and overbearing and thinks he knows all. And Terri covers for him.

B-plot: Spinner doesn't want JT hanging around Paige anymore, so he tries to embarrass him in front of her so she'll want to stop hanging out. But their pranks go too far when JT shows up to harass Spinner at work.

Holiday (1)

Another favorite episode alert! Oh, the drama!

A-plot: Craig and Ashley are still together, but Craig wants his cake and to eat it too, which is why Craig and Manny are also still together. I know it's wrong, but I love every second of it! Craig is certainly in the holiday spirit. Until Manny demands a commitment from him for Christmas. He tells her she's the one for him, that he dumped Ashley, that he'll tell her about them....after the Christmas pageant.

B-plot: Joey is also have some relationship drama this Christmas. He and Sydney are still dating, but Caitlyn is still there shooting longing glances and snide remarks. Sydney's super observant though and she doesn't like what she sees. This is when the show was still trying to hang onto the original original characters, before just focusing on the current students. While I enjoy this drama, because I'm all about love triangles, I'm glad this was the beginning of the end.

Holiday (2)

A-plot: Ashley finds Craig's gifts for her...and Manny. Of course she doesn't know they're for Manny until she sees her with them. Both girls are pissed at Craig for lying to both of them. The tension! The drama! You screwed up the best thing you ever had, Craig.

B-plot: Caitlyn wants to tell Joey how she feels after their kiss, with disastrous results. But it all works out in the end. Sydney was not right for Joey.

This Charming Man

A-plot: Emma is working on getting over Sean, who is now dating Amy. Chris is newly single and interested. But now Emma is learning about Sean's new lifestyle and how he might have stolen Snake's laptop. This distracts Emma from her budding relationship with Chris as she's far too focused on her ex.

B-plot: It's driving test time for the Sophomores and Spinner is nervous! Then gets upset when he realizes Paige thinks their instructor is hot.

Accidents Will Happen (1)

It's THE episode. You know, the one that was too hot for TV. Well, the lead up to that one.

A-plot: Manny's pregnant. I think this episode would have had more of an impact if it hadn't been banned, much discussed, then sneakily aired a couple of times. It disrupted the flow of this plot-line. Anyway, once again, Paige is the voice of reason in the restroom.

Also, the importance of communication and protection. We learn that Craig took Manny's consent to mean that she was on the pill rather than that she was okay with having sex. A very huge difference. I also hate that Manny apologizes to him for getting pregnant. It takes two!

B-plot: Toby wants to be friends with Jimmy again, and he's willing to hack the school's grade system to do it.

"Ask questions first, get naked later." --Paige Michalchuk

Accidents Will Happen (2)

A-plot: Craig and Manny are going to keep the baby, and the news spreads fast. All because Paige can't keep her mouth shut! Dammit, Paige! She asked you not to tell! But the rumor mill can't stop there, since as we know, Manny decides to get an abortion rather than become a teenage mother. Her decision comes along after she and Craig babysit baby Jack with Emma, and she talks to Spike. She's simply not ready and that's okay.

Emma sticking up for Manny makes me cry. Craig is so upset, but it's the girls' friendship that always gets me.

B-plot: Liberty's crush on JT transfer to Sean during a class project. Grease style. I continue to admire this girl's confidence.

Take On Me

It's the Breakfast Club episode! Jimmy and Toby are serving their detention for hacking in 314. Sean is there for telling off Mr. Raditch in 313. Hazel is there because they needed to make her more interesting. Meanwhile, Ellie is there for reasons to be known later. This episode also marks the start of Degrassi's newest couples, and two of my least favorite pairings. This is essentially a fun filler episode after the heaviness of the previous ones.

Don't Dream It's Over

A-plot: Rick convinced Terri that he's changed, and she takes him back. She invites him to hang out with her friends, but the old Rick rears his ugly head and seriously hurts her. Now Terri's in a coma. It has always bothered me that Raditch announces it over the intercom to the whole school. Snake even says they can't discuss details, so why announce it like that at all. Paige's card is fine, since that's a student initiative, but since this happened off campus, it shouldn't have been broadcasted like that.

B-plot: Even though they're now dating, Ellie hasn't been spending any alone time with Sean. She believes that things don't have to change with her friendship with Marco just because she has a boyfriend. I totally agree with her on this one, but I can see why it bothers Sean as well.

Rock and Roll High School

A-plot: Craig wants to win a music competition and Ashley's forgiveness. Harsh song lyrics abound! "Shut up girl and make my lunch!"

B-plot: Joey hurts himself when trying to prove that he's still fun. Caitlyn comes to nurse him back to health. She learns that being his girlfriend and a stepmom isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

It's Raining Men

A-plot: Marco has been out for awhile now, but hasn't gone on date. He gets some help from the most unexpected source...Spinner. He's really come around in his acceptance of Marco. And as is Degrassi tradition, first dates cannot go well. But always in an adorable way.

B-plot: JT is in a cheesy commercial and he wants to have a launch party, where he intends to impress Manny.

"Don't be all up in my fries, dawg!"

I Want Candy

A-plot: Paige and Spinner take a ditch day! Ashley's also been staying home and considers transferring to get away from all of the negativity at Degrassi. The trio go to visit Terri now that she's awake. It isn't all gloom and doom, as this day out was exactly what Ashley needed.

B-plot: JT accidentally finds Snake's will on his computer which upsets Emma. Alex chooses the wrong moment to mess with her, as Emma hits back. It's the first girl fight at Degrassi!

Our House

A-plot: Sean is continuing to get into trouble now that he's friends with Jay. And things only get worse, when Sean gets emancipated after his brother moves for work. He's living alone which means party party party!

B-plot: JT is still crushing on Manny and wants to ask her to the dance. Liberty tells him to go for it. Spinner says not to get involved with the school slut. Funny he doesn't take his own advice later. But JT jumps to conclusions when he sees her with Craig and becomes just another student who judges her.

The Power of Love

A-plot: Jimmy got their group a limo for the end of year dance and really wants the night to be perfect. But with Billy Ray Cyrus guest starring? That's not happening.

B-plot: Sean is failing his class, but Snake gives him a last minute project to help raise his grade. Sean is feeling guilty, so he confesses to stealing the laptop. I'm really proud of Sean for working to turn his life back around.

C-plot: Joey wants Caitlyn to move in. This marks the end of parent plots.

All in all, a very tame finale to an emotional season. But it's a nice break before all hell breaks loose in Season 4.

Degrassi Character Rankings

For this, I tried really hard to only use this Season and leave my future feelings out of it. Which means that Manny Santos can finally be #1! She has a lot of great episodes this season. My other favorite is at the bottom, because she has like two lines this season. As for Rick...he's high up because his character is interesting and he really added something to the show. Not because I like him.
