Degrassi: The Next Generation - Season 8 (2008-2009)

This post is going to contain spoilers for this season, and possibly later seasons if I make references to future events.

Uptown Girl (1)

A-Plot: Another school year is about to start which means a new cheer captain. This time it's Holly J, and of course she doesn't even let Mia try out since she was late. Mia vents to her mom, who agrees to help out more with Isabella so that Mia can make this "her year." I'm always rooting for Mia! She needs to find her people and to be included. Cheerleading would take care of the latter, and maybe new student, Leia, will take care of the former. She also gets scouted to be a model! Go, Mia!

This premiere starts out innocently enough, and it looks like things are going great for Mia. But then...Degrassi goes there again.

B-Plot: Emma, Manny, and Liberty arrive at Smithdale, and Emma is upset to learn that she will not be rooming with Manny. Nor are they even on the same floor. I'm more shocked that Liberty is there, since she's suppose to be at Banting with Damian. Anyway, I feel bad for Emma for not really getting the full college experience like her friends are. She wants to hold on to the past, but sometimes you need to just jump in.

Uptown Girl (2)

A-Plot: Mia did it. She slept with the football player in hopes of booking the job. She also lies and says Isabella is her sister. Well, she got the job, she got the boy, and the friends. But is that really the way she wants to get it all?

B-Plot: We've met Darcy's younger sister before, but now we're really getting to know her. I'm amazed at how much she changes over the course of the show. In this episode, she's wearing a private school uniform, and she judges KC based on his looks. Sounds like Darcy in a different package. Claire claims to not care what people think of her, but when KC dares her to participate in the open mic, she's laughed out of the cafeteria.

Fight the Power

A-Plot: Jane joins the football team. The boys' football team! Of course, they heckle her, but as we already know, Derek doesn't like the be outshined. This quickly turns into a "boys will be boys" story when her teammates jump her and "The Shep" doesn't do anything about it. He might be worse than Raditch. When is Snake getting promoted?!!?

B-Plot: Darcy is moving to Kenya, because of course she is. It's certainly an on-brand way to write her off the show. But this plot is actually about Peter, who is feeling all alone now that his mom has moved and with Darcy leaving. He gets closer to Mia since she knows all about people leaving her.

Didn't We Almost Have it All

A-Plot: Liberty is hoping to get into her mom's sorority, until she's approached by a rival house. Liberty's begins the pledge process but it quickly becomes obvious that they want her as their diversity card. They believe she's a black girl from an underprivileged background who overcame the odds. Her parents are lawyers! She lived in the suburbs! Racist wenches! But Liberty is giving them the benefit of the doubt...until one dummy admits they need a black girl to get more funding. WTF. It's sad that the world works this way.

B-Plot: The rumor mill is churning with word that Anya and Sav had sex (of course not!), which means the Power Squad has no more virgins...except Holly J. She devises a plan to lose her v-card, but it doesn't go the way she wants.

Man with Two Hearts

A-Plot: Peter gets close to Riley, since he really has no one else. He even starts turning down Mia to hang out with him, which sends the wrong signals to Riley. Who is secretly gay and has a crush on Peter. Riley kissed him, then ran away, and is now avoiding Peter. Peter tries to let him know that it's okay, but Riley lashes out. I actually really like Riley's storyline. It's so different from Marco's.

B-Plot: Alli insists on working on their project at Connor's house, because she wants to see how a teacher lives. She sneaks into his bedroom where she and Alli find....a vibrator! Which was oddly still in its packaging. Spike catches them and she looks old. What happened?! But the girls steal it, because why not? It obviously wasn't in use. And Claire has NO IDEA about masturbation. Woah. But I think it's great that she's willing to ask her mom about it, after nearly giving her a heart attack.

With or Without You

A-Plot: Alli convinces her parents to let her go on the school's camping trip, where she plans on snagging her crush...Johnny?!?! Meanwhile, it's Sav and Anya's six month anniversary. He's hoping to have sex, but Anya finds out that he once again, left her out of a family dinner after promising to invite her. The Bhandaris sure are busy despite not being allowed to date.

This is also when Anya tells Sav that she'd like to become Muslim for him. This is right before she finds the condoms and Aahhh! They're interrupted by screams. Sav admonishes his sister for being in a tent with a boy. DOUBLE STANDARD! Anya will not stand for that. Sorry, Sav.

B-Plot: Emma, Manny, and Liberty all have their eyes on Kelly! No dating your roommate! And these girls need to stop swapping boys! Which I love that they brought that up!

Money for Nothing

A-Plot: Holly J is broke! I thought this happened later, but I guess binging makes everything happen more quickly. Her dad "made some risky investments" so now her mom is all about budgeting. She cut up the credit cars, the car is going back, and Holly J is getting to school on the bus. Needless to say, Holly J does not take this well, but better than one would expect. She's still terrible to people and a liar, but she gets a job. She certainly falls from the top to the way way bottom.

B-Plot: Peter's mom is back! And crampin' his style. This is a pretty throw away plot, but it does show that Peter is maturing.

Lost in Love (1)

A-Plot: Spinner got rejected from the police academy, which ruins Jane's plans for them for the next year...Except she thinks he got in. But when the truth comes out, Spin goes out and gets drunk with Jay who is the not the voice of reason this time. I wasn't really interested in Jane's drama, but it was nice to see Jay and Jimmy, and see Spinner trying to do more with his life.

Meanwhile, Connor and KC both ask Clare to the dance! Alli get a rose from a secret admirer who wants to stay secret. Niner drama! It's cute.

B-Plot: Kelly gets dumped, so who jumps in to comfort him? Emma! NO GIRL NO!!!

Lost in Love (2)

A-Plot: Spinner is trying to win Jane back. Even if he has to impersonate a teenage farmer and propose. Does Jane seem like the kind of girl who would accept a public proposal at 17?! I don't like them as a couple. I love them separately, but together? Not so much.

The return of Toby! Kind of. He's hosting the Bot Wars that Clare, Alli, KC, and Connor had been preparing for. Clare also lets KC know that she wants to go to the dance with him, but feels pressured to go with Connor. Knowing that Connor is autistic, makes this a hard decision. Clare likes KC, but she knows how Connor is.

And most importantly, Jay is still in love with Manny! Janny FOREVER!!!

B-Plot: Emma and Kelly had a good date, but then his ex shows up and wants to talk. Emma wins, because duh.

Bad Medicine

A-Plot: Riley is the star of the football team (other than Jane), but he doesn't have a hot chick on his arm like is expected. Maybe he can ask out Anya? She is a cheerleader after all. On top of that, The Shep compliments him on beefing up, and we learn that he's on "enhancers". He also has secret sexy chats online with this guy he knew from camp. Get it together, Riley! But...roid rage! It's real. And is it just me, or did Degrassi totally abandon their "no tolerance" policy for violence.

B-Plot: Danny and Derek reconnect a bit, as Derek wants Danny to hook him up with Leia. She doesn't like him, but agrees to it. Danny walks in on the date to save her, but sees her having a good time. Because she was talking about liking you!!! But Derek isn't as much of a jerk as Danny thought he was when he realizes that he still tried despite liking Leia himself. Good job, Derek.

Causing a Commotion

A-Plot: The Shep continues to be the worst, by giving Clare detention because he doesn't like that she stood up for Connor after their so-called principal refused to give him accommodations. Is Clare the new Emma? No. She's not quite as bad, but she does point out the injustices she sees. But she sees more than that, when Connor snaps at Alli over a pencil. This all builds momentum until the entire school, and the school board, discovers who the real The Shep is.

We've known since the beginning of the season that something was "off" about Connor just based on his behavior. Now he's confirmed to be Degrassi's first autistic student.

B-Plot: Sav and Anya still love each other. He wants to get back together, but she reminds him that he's been avoiding telling his parents about them. Then he tells his father who says to invite Anya over for dinner. Unfortunately, it's not to get to know her. It's to let her know that Sav will marry an Indian girl. But Sav stands up for her, and the too ride off into the sunset! For now. I really do find them adorable.

Heat of the Moment

A-Plot: Holly J embarrasses Alli, badly. She confronts Johnny who denies their relationship, and then dumps Alli. She will have her revenge! But Alli goes way too far when she gets the whole school to join a I Hate Holly J group, earning her a criminal record for cyber-bullying. Alli goes through most of the episode still blaming Holly J for everything, until she realizes that she completely broke her. Alli needs to take more responsibility for her actions. But she's right, everyone knows who she is now.

B-Plot: Peter's dad who is never around drops the baby off with Peter so that he can run out and have fun. Luckily, his girlfriend is a mother and can help him out with his baby sister. Peter struggles at first, but he does have a heart, and ultimately learns to care for the baby.

Jane Says (1)

A-Plot: Jane's brother is a loser and she tries to help him out by having his daughter over more. But this asshat doesn't care. He wants their loser father back in the house. Jane starts having odd flashbacks and can tell something wasn't right about their father leaving. This causes Jane to go down a dark hole.

B-Plot: Danny wants Leia to hang out with him and his friends, but she says that Sav has been hitting on her and making her uncomfortable. Then she tells the group that she's close to Fall Out Boy, which unravels when she can't get them into a sold out concert.

Jane Says (2)

A-Plot: Jane remembers what her father did to her when she was little. Thankfully Lucas reacts appropriately after being a giant turd!

B-Plot: Alli's mom found her "school clothes" but luckily Clare brought Darcy's old clothes for donation, so Alli something to wear. She also convinced Clare to try some things on, which gets her a lot of attention. But instead of being happy for her, Alli is jealous! At least until Johnny admits that she looks good in whatever.

Touch of Grey

A-Plot: Emma feels invisible. Until she falls into the pothead crowd! The best way to make college friends. I'd totally hang out with Blaze. But this plot takes a dark turn when Becca is rushed to the hospital. Emma fears the weed was laced, which is a real danger and something I thought happened to be the first time I had weed brownies. They weren't, but those things are no joke. In Becca's case, she was just too high to remember her insulin. Which is the only time Degrassi ever deals with diabetes.

B-Plot: KC tries out for basketball and we find out that he's living in a group home. The whole school finds out too, thanks to Connor spilling the secret. Is KC the new Sean? What did he do?!

Heart of Glass

A-Plot: Alli and Johnny are still sneaking around, but he's being a perfect gentleman. Much to Alli's annoyance. She feels like he's not into her, so she asks him to have sex. And immediately regrets it. But we learn that it was Johnny's first time to and he's okay with waiting until she's ready.

B-Plot: Is Peter really over Darcy? He joins Mock UN and chooses his country to be Kenya. Mia finds out that he's still been talking to Darcy and even has an application to join her in Kenya! Needless to say, they do not last any longer.

Up Where We Belong

A-Plot: Mia is failing English. She's already a year behind, but she can't keep up with school, work, and parenting. So she drops one. She drops out of school. Aka gets a roll on The Vampire Diaries! Well, not yet. She's goes back to school and puts modeling on hold.

Sav is struggling to decide between his dream and his parents'. Does he take a music class or physics? He tries talking to his dad, but we all know how that goes.

B-Plot: Holly J gets a bad grade on her art project, but has the chance to redo it. With emotion. She fails again and basically pulls the "Those you can't do, teach" to her teacher. She doesn't just bully students.

Danger Zone

A-Plot: Blue asks Holly J to the dance, but she turns him down. She says she has to work, but also, she might be crushing on Spinner. But then her attitude gets a gun in her face and Spinner shot in the process.

Peter wants Mia back! He thinks she's in The Dot with the gunman which prompts him to tell her that he loves her.

B-Plot: KC and Clare are bickering like crazy! Obviously they just need to kiss.

Degrassi Goes Hollywood/Paradise City (1-4)

A-Plot: Paige is working as an assistant to a reality TV star in Hollywood, although she has lead her friends to believe she's a celebrity stylist. She sees her chance, when the brat she works for wants an audition with Jason Mewes. Paige knows him! Too bad that Hailey can't sing and it's a musical. This is Paige's second chance after getting cut out of Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian Eh!

Or not, because she's not an actress and Jason knows it. But the producer won't let her go, and she's doing awesome with magazines and tabloids. And she's letting it go to her head. Hailey also gives her some horrible advice, which Paige naively follows. She loses her fame and her friends.

B-Plot: Jason Mewes needs a band for his upcoming moving. Degrassi's current band, The Studz, plan to audition! They get it, but then Peter punches the lead actor for hitting on Mia. Peter plots a roadtrip to LA to suck up to Jason to get rehired. He also let's Manny catch a ride, since he owes her big time. Teenagers on a road-trip in a school bus hijinks ensue.

C-Plot: Manny is hooking up with her drama professor?! Who seems to be quite controlling and holding her back. He gets into her bad and she screws up her audition with Jason. But Kevin Smith has her back and demands she auditions again in LA. Manny doubts herself the whole way, but Jay is there for her. Like always! JANNY! Jay and Manny are my favorite part of this finale. I'm sad to see them go, but I'm happy to see them happy.

D-Plot: Marco and Ellie are heading to Hollywood to hang out with Paige. Where Ellie runs into...CRAIG! She's also using this trip to avoid her father, whom has been deployed since...forever. Her drinking comes back with a vengeance, and this otherwise light-hearted movie turns very dark as she walks straight into the ocean. She can't swim. And she's drunk. And upset. And has a history with self-harm.
