Degrassi: Next Class - Season 4 (2017)

This post is going to contain spoilers for this season, and possibly later seasons if I make references to future events, and for previous reincarnations of the series.

#BackToReality

Grace and Jonah have been secretly dating. Finally! Not so secret is that hickey on her neck! Everyone thinks there must be something wrong with the guy or the relationship if she won't admit to who it is. It's Jonah who wants to stay secret for fear of hurting Frankie.

Lola offers to take Yael bra shopping when she notices how uncomfortable they are about their boobs. The new bra fits and makes them physically more comfortable, but the accompanying attention is still unwanted. However, a binder completely changes their life.

Esme doesn't like when Zig wants to be Maya's partner for an art project instead of her. She decides to make him jealous by posing nude for Saad. This is also how Saad learns that Maya had tried to killed herself and he feels awful because he didn't realize when he opened the door for her. This plot goes differently that you'd expect. It has a kind of Breakfast Club as all four wind up with detention because of the nudity in their art, discuss Maya's suicide, and starts the rift between Zig and Saad.

#GetMoney

After an uncomfortable conversation with a counselor, Frankie realizes that she looks depressed online. Solution? Show off her best life to show that she's over Jonah! Unfortunately, everyone is busy so she has no one to hang out with in order to take fun pictures. Except for Zig and Esme. Her "fake it, til I make it" plot doesn't work and she lets out her anger on Jonah's guitar. I love Frankie, but why is she the star of every episode. First her racism, and now her doomed from the start relationship.

Saad's little sister realizes that he's being bullied when she finds his broken camera. He explains that he fought back, and is going to earn the money to fix the camera. He overhears Lola telling Shay about the open busboy position and asks to try out. Sadly for him, Zig and Tiny corner him on his way home just adding to his stress at being alone in a new country.

Shay is still hoping to get scouted and begins pushing herself harder, but then turns to supplements. I think it was really irresponsible for Mr. Armstrong to mention supplements to Shay. He didn't mention anything illegal, or very harmful, but still. Don't do that! She tries to get a job at Lola's Cantina, but she sucks at it. She is desperate to her her hands on those supplements to achieve her dreams and does something bad.

#ILookLikeA

Goldi and Winston! I forgot about that! Everyone keeps pointing out that they've been flirting, Goldi insists that they are just friend. Until she receives a picture of his "little Winston." Yikes. It turns out that it wasn't for her, but embarrassing!

Miles is encouraged to apply to writing programs for after graduation rather than just going to business school. Of course, his evil father has to plant doubts into his head. Then he believes that he was nominated for "diversity," so he blows the interview. It isn't until other students speak up about how they've been affected by his writing despite not being bisexual, rich, white dudes.

The boys want to edit out Yael's armpit hair from their club photo, but it turns into many more changes than just that. We already know that Yael is not that shallow or concerned with their appearance. Leave them alone! Or at least ask before digitizing their face! But Hunter is going to ask her to start shaving, which he is not suppose to ask. Thankfully, this leads to a deeper discussion of their relationship. I'm proud of Hunter to using words instead of explosions.

#RollUpToTheClubLike

Grace doesn't get new lungs, so she makes a bucket list. Which includes having an orgasm, but Jonah won't have sex with her. We finally get the real reason Jonah is abstinent. But sex isn't the only way to get off...

Goldi and Winston go on a date. Kind of. It's a double with Zoe and Rasha, and it's technically a student council thing. Kind of. Sneaky kids! Unfortunately, on the walk home, she is attacked and has her hijab pulled off.

Maya has lost her passion for music. Or has she? Tristan volunteers her to write the new theme song for All Inclusive. After a stressful start, she finds her groove.

#Preach

Saad is feeling even more on the outside after Goldi starts a club for Muslim students and has a rally to support Belgium after the terrorist attack. His feelings are different than theirs. However, Lola seems to like him for him.

Frankie has been hanging out with Esme and Zig a lot, and people are starting to talk. They're relationship is totally innocent on Frankie's part, but I certainly would not have objected to an actual threesome. This is another case where the writers ran out of coupling ideas and just threw these three together, but I'm here for it this time.

Zoe starts worrying that Rasha still has feelings for her ex. So she ups her efforts at romance, but nothing goes as she planned. It's kinda cute. I like a cutesy plot for Zoe for once. Zosha Forever!

#FactsOnly

Yael is angered that the boys think they don't like "fart symphony" idea because girls like different things. However, this is the episode when Yael finally figures out why their skin has been so uncomfortable. Lola helps Yael put a word to their feeling: genderqueer. Yael gets a makeover, but one to be more themselves and I cry. Unfortunatly, Hunter can't handle dating someone who is not a girl.

Maya auditions for the talent show, but Goldi doesn't want her to perform that song because it glamorizes suicide. Instead of arguing, she understands and performs a different song. Craig and I both wish she had done "Last Exit" but it was the right choice for the show. And it gets her an interview with Craig and his band!

Zig, Esme, and Frankie become a real triad after Frankie cheers him up when everyone else made fun of him for not getting into college. Awesome. Favorite relationship ever, after Janny.

#Fire

Esme talks her way into joining the boys' camping trip! This of course, also includes Frankie. Esme believes Zig's friends hate her, but Frankie encourages to try to befriend them. The weed brownies she brought as a peace offering did not go over well. Then Frankie refuses to sleep with Zig, so Esme abandons her in the woods, and fakes anaphylaxis. If they didn't hate her before, they do now.

Tiny invites Shay on the camping trip since Zig's girlfriends are going. She's nervous about having sex, but hopes Lola and Frankie will be there for her if she needs them. Unnecessary. Aawww.

Maya is still blocked, so Jonah invites her on the camping trip with him and Grace. The rejected weed brownies certainly helped her relax, but not so much on the music front...THOSE THINGS ARE NO JOKE! I ate too many once like Maya and OMG...never ever ever ever again.

#GetYouAManThatCanDoBoth

Tristan has been lying to Miles about his recovery; he's not as far along as he lets on. But he;s going to get there so he can do all of things they promised each other. I feel so bad for Tristan. Not because of his recovery, but because he feels like he has to push himself so hard to not be a burden to his boyfriend.

Shay hopes to get a promposal from Tiny now that they're relationship is at the next level. As the days goes on she just assumes that they're not going to go, but then...Aawwww.

Lola continues to help out Saad, but she also looks into his browser history to see who he's been talking to. He admits that he was talking to someone and he's worried that someone might come for him. Yael offers to help wipe his computer, but not without taking some screenshots.

#Obsessed

Zig and Maya have been spending more time together after his breakup, so the two decide to go to prom together! Just like old times! Except Esme...this might be the thing that pushes her over the edge. Figuratively, as she pushses Zig over a literal edge.

Hunter refuses to uses Yael's preferred pronouns, but then tries to talk to them at prom. Except the cops show up, of course. There was a bomb threat, and Yael thinks they have useful information: Saad's computer files.

Miles thinks he can't go to London because his father won't pay for a writing program. He tries to figure out the funding on his own, but his father suggests allowing him early access to his trust fund. I still don't think he's changed, but he's been showing that he's making progress. Miles too.

#KThxBye

Maya gets worried when Zig hasn't returned from his chat with Esme. She takes a walk and finds a frantic Esme and an injured Zig. Now she just wants to stay in bed rather than go to graduation so nothing bad can happen. Esme, yep. She has hit rock bottom and I am so sad that we don't get to see what happened to her.

Zoe and Rasha are prom queens! So cute! But Zoe misses her mom, so Rasha encourages her to call. She leaves a message inviting her to graduation. Instead, she sends her husband with a "gift." It's her passport, birth certificate, and other documents she needs to register for university. That is the worst thing I have seen. That is awful. But she has friends now.

Esme shows up at Frankie's house and asks for her help devising a plan to get him back and away from Maya. We also learn that she's probably the one who called in the bomb threat, promoting Lola and Yael to apology to Saad for what happened.
